Text messaging has been around for 20 years and is one of the most popular modes of communication. An average of 88 texts are sent daily for people ages 18 to 29 compared to 17 phone calls a day.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) confirmed that four wireless carriers in the United States would implement text-to-911 messages by May 15, 2014. The local emergency response centers will need specific equipment to receive the texts.
