Fire Prevention Week 2016: Don’t Wait: Check the Date!

Fire Prevention Week is held in October every year. For the third year in a row, the National Fire Protection Association is devoting the week to fire alarm safety. The purpose of the week is to educate and raise public awareness about the importance of smoke alarm safety with the theme, “Don’t Wait: Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

It is easy to purchase a smoke alarm, install it and forget about it. However, smoke alarms should be checked and replaced every 10 years in order to ensure your safety. In 2015, the NFPA found that three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

To protect your family and help prevent a fire in your home, check the age of your smoke alarm by looking for the manufacturing date on the back. To learn more about fire alarm safety, view our infographic and visit the official Fire Prevention Week website.
