Drag Rescue Device Installation Guide
Purpose
The Fire-Dex Drag Rescue Device (DRD) is designed to help rescuers quickly and effectively extract a downed firefighter from a hazardous environment. This integrated system enables a controlled, horizontal drag, reducing strain on the rescuer while maintaining the firefighter's stability during extraction.
Limitations
The DRD is not designed for vertical lifting or lowering and should never be used as an escape device. It is intended solely for horizontal extraction of a fallen firefighter.
Proper Use
1. Assess the Situation: Evaluate the victim’s condition and identify a clear, safe escape route.
2. Access the DRD: Lift the DRD flap located at the upper center of the back of the coat.
3. Deploy the DRD: Pull the strap until it is fully extended and ready for use.
4. Execute the Rescue: Grip the DRD firmly and carefully drag the firefighter to safety, maintaining a controlled and steady movement.
Cleaning
Apply universal precautions when handling all soiled or contaminated clothing. This means wearing examination gloves, an apron or similar front covering garment, goggles, and an N95 respirator.
The DRD must be laundered following cleaning instructions provided with the garment. Do not use chlorine bleach or solvents when cleaning.
The DRD may be removed, placed in a mesh bag, and laundered in the same cycle as outer shells. It can also remain attached to the outer shell so long as all closures are secured prior to laundering. Air dry the DRD before reinstallation into the outer shell.
Re-Installation After Use or Washing
1. Carefully inspect the DRD for damage after each use (inspection instructions below).
2. Straighten the DRD, keeping the Velcro up and label down. Ensure there are no twists in the straps.
3. Open the DRD flap on the back of the coat and insert the DRD straps into the 2 slits, making sure to keep the Velcro facing outward and properly centered with the flap.
4. Once the DRD straps have been pulled through the outer shell, flip the coat over so you're viewing the inside.
5. Make 2 large loops out of the DRD straps and circle them around the sleeve openings.
6. Reach through each loop and into the outer shell sleeve. Pull the sleeve inside out, ensuring the DRD loops are now securely wrapped around each sleeve.
7. Find the snaps at the wrist of each outer shell sleeve and align them with the wrist snaps of its corresponding liner sleeve.
8. Connect each wrist snap and give it a slight tug to confirm it's secure.
9. Pull the connected outer shell and liner sleeve back through the coat. Make sure there aren't any twists.
10. Zip and snap all remaining connection points, fastening the collar and both sides of the closure. Double check that all layers are properly aligned and fastened.
Inspection
The DRD must be inspected on a monthly basis and when an advanced inspection is performed for:
1. Proper installation in the garment
2. Soiling/contamination
3. Burn and chemical damage or discoloration
4. Broken/missing threads or stitching
5. Punctures
6. Cracking/splitting
7. Cuts, holes, and abrasions
8. If the DRD is damaged, it must be replaced
